We had a little midweek break to Brean a couple of weeks ago (Oct 2014) so I thought I’d write a bit of a review of Pontins and to explain what Ollie got up to on his holiday.
Pontins is a really good value for money, family holiday. We paid £59 for a Monday- Friday break and we really liked it. I see a lot of complaints about Pontins but to be honest, I think it is quite arrogant to pay such small prices and expect 5 star VIP treatment. The apartments are basic but for less than £15 per night, per family, I don’t see any reason to moan.
The apartment was clean but I would say there is not a lot of attention to detail. For example there was a sticker on the underside of the sink that I noticed when I was in the bath. The room had obviously been cleaned but not a deep clean. Like I say, I don’t think that is cause for complaint.
Pontins Brean has had a bit of investment so the apartments have been upgraded. They have patio doors opening out onto communal grassy/ picnic areas. A large living space which has a kitchen, dining area and sofa bed. A bathroom with a three-quarter bath and shower and one twin bedroom. We decided to push the twin beds together and put Ollie’s little cot in the bedroom too so that we had a living area and separate bedroom.
We booked self-catering but we ate in the half board restaurant on the first night and it was really good. It was £10 for two adults, all you can eat including soft drinks. The food was really good and a lot a variety. We ate there 3 out of the 4 nights. I’d definitely reccommend going half board. It is excellent value for money especially if you have kids, desserts are included too. I think it is more expensive in the main season but still good value and cheaper if you book in advance.
The site itself was really good. The swimming pool is big and has a toddler pool and a large family pool. There is a slide too which was good fun! Read more about Ollie’s swimming adventure in Oliver Octopus. There is an indoor soft play area, Ollie was a bit too young but great for older kids. A large arcade and outdoor play areas.
For the adults, an all day traditional style pub, a large entertainment venue with a bar and family shows such as singers, magicians and of course the Bluecoats. As well as a large supermarket on site.
The site is in a good location. The beach is a short walk away, Ollie had his first stand on the beach.
Brean Leisure park is just a few minutes down the road as well as more arcades and restaurants close by if you fancy a change of scenery. Weston Super-Mare is just a short drive away and ideal for a little day trip.
Overall, a great little family holiday even if you go outside the main season the site still runs entertainment and opens the facilities. It isn’t 5 star luxury but it is a great little get away with kids. I have no complaints!
